2010 launch – Birmingham aiming to smash record

Monday, January 25th, 2010

2009 saw 99 Birmingham venues accredited to the Best Bar None scheme’s standard – more than any other participating Local Authority.

This year organisers are hoping to top 150.

Sponsored by Bacardi and run by Birmingham City Council, in partnership with West Midlands Police and the West Midlands Fire Service, the scheme, now in its third year, rewards good management from licensees in discouraging binge-drinking and helping to prevent alcohol related crime.

Birmingham pubs, clubs and bars are assessed on criteria such as door and security policies, first aid, how they deal with abusive customers and what systems they have in place to deal with alcohol related crime.

As well as an overall winner – Best Bar None – there will be winners and finalists for seven categories:

  • best city centre pub
  • best suburban pub
  • best city centre bar
  • best suburban bar
  • best nightclub; best hotel bar
  • best independent venue.

Those places that are accredited to the scheme – even if they don’t win an award – will receive a Best Bar None plaque to display in their premises.

Jacqui Kennedy, Director of Regulatory Services at Birmingham City Council, said: “I know that as the second city we have many, many excellent licensed venues that haven’t taken their rightful place as accredited for Best Bar None, so I’ve set a target for Birmingham to increase our number of accredited venues to 150 in 2010.”

Neil Robertson, Chief Executive Officer of Best Bar None, added: “It’s great to see Birmingham’s ongoing commitment to the Best Bar None scheme, which continues to help create safer, more prosperous areas up and down the country.”

Bruce Ray Director of External Affairs, Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands, said: “Bacardi Brown Formans are thrilled to be sponsoring Birmingham Best Bar None again.  The standards of the licensed premises in the city are second to none and we believe that this scheme is one of the best in the country. One of the most impressive features is the excellent partnership working.  We are looking forward to the standards being as high as last year and attracting more expressions of interest”

The launch of this year’s scheme will take place at 2.30pm on Tuesday 26th January at the Dragon Inn at the Arcadian, Hurst Street.

Man on the Moon is Best Bar None

Friday, September 11th, 2009

A community pub from Kings Norton has been judged Birmingham’s best licensed establishment, in the city council’s annual Best Bar None programme.

A celebration at the ICC last night, to mark the climax of the 2009 event, heard that the Man on the Moon had won both the suburban pub category, and the overall award.

The Redditch Road pub, which prides itself on being part of the local community, is – like the 2008 winner, the Old Contemptibles -  part of the Mitchells & Butlers empire.

Other category winners were: Scruffy Murphy’s (independent venue); Dragon Inn (city centre pub); Revolution (city centre bar); Novotel (hotel bar); AIR (nightclub) and Joe’s Bar (suburban bar).

Jacqui Kennedy, the council’s director of regulatory services, said: “Each shortlisted venue was visited to assess its merits, before the winners were selected for meeting a wide range of factors, including the quality of their food and drink, service levels, staff training, security and ambience.

“The judges had no idea which establishment they were selecting, as all the information from the assessments was presented to them without identifying the particular venue.”

More than 1,200 public votes were also cast online for the Birmingham Choice category, won by the Broad Street Walkabout, with the Loft Lounge as runner-up.

Ms Kennedy was delighted at the success of the event, the decision of Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands to become Best Bar None’s sponsor for a second successive year, and the quality of the entries.

“When we launched the scheme in 2008, we were determined to make it a showcase for the best which Birmingham can offer, to both its residents and visitors to the city, but didn’t know how it would be received by the licensed trade, as there is a lot of work involved,” she admitted.

“The first year went very well though, and when we heard that club-owners and bar managers had been visiting the winning establishments to learn from their success, we realised we were on to a winner.

“We hope Best Bar None will now become a fixture on Birmingham’s pubs and clubs scene for years to come, helping us, the police, and everyone who cares about the city to drive standards even higher.”

Parliamentary approval for Bar Risa

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

jb017011
Scott Hempel from Bar Risa, Broad Street, Birmingham, attended an exclusive reception on The House of Commons Terrace for winners of Best Bar None (BBN) scheme awards across the UK.

More than 100 people attended the reception with over half the attendees being BBN award winners from schemes around the country. The prestigious event hosted by Lord Redesdale, was an excellent opportunity to showcase BBN as a highly effective initiative in the fight against alcohol related crime. Scott was photographed with Lord Redesdale as he thanked and congratulated him for his achievements in the scheme.

Phil Woolas MP, Home Office Minister of State, kicked off the speeches saying how very important BBN is to the industry and the country and thanking the winners of the schemes for their hard work. He told the assembled audience of BBN winners, MPs – including Licensing Minister Gerry Sutcliffe and Assistant Government Whip Dawn Butler – and industry leaders that he welcomed the work of the scheme. Phil also pointed out that the idea of responsible drinking is mission critical for the Government and BBN is moving forward with the change in culture to show that we can all still enjoy a drink but in a responsible manner.

Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands sponsored the reception and Elizabeth Crossick, Director of Government Relations & Social Responsibility Europe, spoke on behalf of the company.

Bobby Smiljanic, Licensing Team Leader of Leicester BBN, gave a spirited presentation on how winning ‘The Most Innovative Scheme’ at last year’s BBN National Conference has helped to grow their scheme, with more venues taking part resulting in wider credibility.
